Discussion 1 "What is the Media?"

The media serves as a vast, interconnected network of channels, much like an ocean with various rivers and seas flowing into it. It is not a singular entity but a collective of platforms, including social media, news media, and entertainment media. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook function as streams that feed into the broader landscape of media consumption. News outlets, books, and magazines contribute to this ecosystem, all forming what is commonly referred to as "the Media." Entertainment media, such as Netflix, also plays a significant role in shaping public perception and culture. After briefly watching The Social Dilemma (2020), I am only mildly surprised by the negative impact of media, given how easily humans are influenced. My mother’s saying, “You will become what you watch,” resonates with the idea that we unconsciously absorb and imitate what we see. The documentary effectively spreads awareness about the dangers of media manipulation, a necessary step in addressing this issue. Ultimately, individuals must take responsibility for their own media consumption, setting personal limits and prioritizing self-improvement over passive entertainment. While the media has the potential for both good and bad, its current trajectory seems to lean more toward the negative.

Discussion 2 "First Amendment and Freedom of the Press"

In my opinion, free speech should have some limits, especially when it incites violence or threatens public safety. While freedom of expression is essential, speech that directly leads to harm, such as hate speech or calls for violence, should be regulated to protect individuals and society. However, any restrictions must be carefully implemented to avoid infringing on genuine expression or creating a slippery slope that could lead to excessive censorship. The government plays a crucial role in protecting free speech while ensuring that harmful speech does not put society at risk. Legal measures, such as defamation suits and criminal charges, exist to address speech that violates laws, but certain exceptions, like speech that presents an imminent threat, must be clearly defined. Social media platforms, as private companies, have the right to moderate content, yet there is debate about their influence over public discourse. Public officials, given their societal impact, should be held to a higher standard in their speech. Ultimately, the biggest concern for me is balancing free speech with the need to prevent harm, particularly in the age of social media, where misinformation and hate speech can spread rapidly. While it is important to allow open dialogue, safeguards must be in place to prevent speech that leads to real-world harm.

Comment from student, Riley Geis:
"I agree with your views on the First Amendment. It is important for people to realize they have the freedom of speech but also must accept any repercussions for what they say. I agree with your stance about social media having the right to ban users for violating company rules. I think free speech should not be limited on any of these platforms, but users should realize they could be punished for what they say on the platforms. I agree with the large free speech issue of the media's ability to twist the truth to a story. It has become so difficult to actually find out what happens in the news. News stories are twisted to better fit the platform's political agenda, and it is so frustrating!"

Student Joanna Stanford, says that social media can ban posts, but platforms aren’t always well-intentioned. Public figures and average users differ, and transparency in government and business intel is crucial. She can easily distinguish content sources, but not everyone can. Still, she classifies anything outside government and business as public discourse.

I find this important, most of all, for the reason so people aren't defenseless against hate-incited speech and are able to regulate unbeneficial comments on digital platforms.

Discussion 3 "You Pick a News Story"

I chose this story because of my admiration for LeBron James, whom I see as a highly influential figure in modern basketball. Additionally, my interest in playing basketball made this story particularly appealing. The impact of this story lies in its ability to showcase the greatness and often unseen achievements of one of the most prestigious basketball players of all time. It highlights the immense dedication and hard work required to build such a lasting legacy. LeBron’s efforts have undoubtedly elevated the NBA, setting new standards for future generations.
